Is it possible investigate natural paternity, maternity or brotherhood and sisterhood using ABO blood typing?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Ans. No it is not a relevant test to determine the above said relations just by using ABO blood groups. The ABO blood typing test involves use of an antigen agglutination. The antigen is present on the RBC. RBC antigen testing cannot be considered as a powerfull tool for determining paternity or maternity as the frequencies of the gene which code for antigens are not very low.

Hence it can be concluded that determining the blood types can provide us with a possibility of biological parents but it cannot be considered as a powerfull tool for investigation.

In humans, the ABO blood type is controlled by a single gene with three possible alleles. Allele IA codes for blood type A and is co-dominant to allele IB which codes for blood type B. Allele i is recessive to the other two and codes for blood type O. A man of blood group O marries a woman of blood group A.  The wife's father is blood group O.  What is the probability that their children will have blood group O?
