What is the importance of water, carbon and nitrogen for living organisms?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Importance of water,carbon and nitrogen:

  • Water is the main solvent of the living beings and it is necessary practically for all biochemical reactions, including as reagent of photosynthesis. There are several properties of water that are very important for life.
  • Carbon is the main chemical element of organic molecules.Carbon dioxide is also reagent of photosynthesis and product of the energetic metabolism of the living beings.
  • Nitrogen is a fundamental chemical element of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins that in their turn are the main functional molecules of the living beings.Nitrogen is also part of the nucleic acid molecules, the basis of reproduction, heredity, and protein synthesis.

Nitrogen is a vital element for all living systems, but except for a few types of bacteria, blue-green algae, and some soil fungi, most organisms cannot utilize N2 from the atmosphere. The formation of "fixed" nitrogen is therefore necessary to sustain life, and the simplest form of fixed nitrogen is ammonia NH3. A possible pathway for ammonia synthesis by a living system is: 12N2(g)+32H2O(l)→NH3(aq)+32O2(g) where (aq) means the ammonia is dissolved in water. Substance ΔG∘f (kJ⋅mol−1) N2(g) 0 H2O(l) −237.1...

Carbon Dating: All living organisms contain two isotopes (types) of carbon; carbon-12 ( 12C) and carbon-14 (14C). Carbon-12 is stable, meaning that its atoms do not decay. Carbon-14 however, is radioactive or unstable, meaning that an atom of carbon-14 may decay. It does this by throwing off an electron and thus transforming itself into Nitrogen 14. The ratio of carbon-14 to carbon-12 is the same for all living organisims, about 1/10, 000. However, once an organisim dies the carbon-14 begins...

The radioactive 14C in living organisms results in an activity of 15.3 disintegrations per minute per gram (d/min·g) of carbon. If a piece of leather uncovered by an archeologist is measured to have 9.0 d/min·g, what is the approximate age of the leather? The half-life of 14C is 5730 years.
