The phenomenon is of utmost importance, as different ecological, cellular and molecular events depend on the availability of nitrogen.

The most abundant form of nitrogen is present as inorganic nitrogen (N2) in the atmosphere (78%), that as such is in the unusable form for most of the living organisms. The overall process of conversion of atmospheric nitrogen into nitrates and nitrites through different industrial and biological processes is called nitrogen fixation.
