Question

The result is that the sodium and chlorine ions______in water

The result is that the sodium and chlorine ions______in water

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Sodium Chloride (NaCl) are soluble in water

Reaction

NaCl+ water --> Na+ (aqueous)+Cl -(aqueous)+water

On addition to water the sodium section of NaCl is attracted to oxygen side of water molecules and Chlorine section of NaCl attracted to hydrogen side of water molecules.

This cause the NaCl to split and NaCl dissolve in water separating Na+ and Cl-. A hydration shell is formed around them thus preventing the Sodium and Chlorine to form ionic bond again.

Chlorine Bleach is a solution of sodium hypochlorite in water. It usually comes as 5.25% w/v. If you pour in 100.0 ml in your washing machine bleach holder and your washing machine holds a total volume of 3.0 ft³, determine the new percentage of bleach in the filled washing machine. Assume that the density of the resulting solution will be close to water at 1.0 g/ml.

6. (1) A water treatment plant applies chlorine for disinfection so that 10 mg/L chlorine is achieved immediately after mixing. The volume of water treated each day is 25,000,000 gal. What is the mass of chlorine needed by this plant every day? (2) The disinfection takes place in a contact tank which is a CSTR at steady state. Chlorine concentration in the contact tank is constant at 3 mg/L. Effluent of this contact tank will enter drinking water distribution systems...
