Explain why osmosis can be observed by using pressure senesors such as the exercise using Pasco equipment that yo uwould have done in excercise IV. If you outfitted a U-tube with different pressure sensors on each side and filled each side with different solutions seperated by a semi-permeable membrane, which sensor would experience a decrease in pressure and which would experience an increase? Explain why this would occor. (it's the U shaped aperatusm that consists of two cylnders, seperated by a semi permiable membrane).

Answer #1

The two arms of U tube is separated by a semipermeable membrane with right side arm containing solution having lower concentration of solute than on the left side. Initially the level is the same in both arms of U tube . As osmosis starts , it pushes the solvents from rivht arm to left arm and pushes the solution up even though , the membrane is permeable to solvent until the osmotic pressure in the right arm equal to the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the left arm.

Osmotic occur due to the free energy of the solvent molecules in two region . Pure water or solvent has more free energy compared to that present in a solution . Therefore during osmosis , solvent or water moves through the semipermeable from a region of its high free energy to a region if it's free energy.

We typically measure osmotic pressure indirectly by determining the pressure required to stop osmosis. Osmotic pressure can be calculated using the following equation: π = iRT(ΔC), where π = osmotic pressure (mm H2O) i = number of osmotically active particles resulting from dissociation of each molecule in solution. =1 1 R = gas constant (848 L-mm H2O/mol-degree) 0.0821 T = temperature (K) 296 ΔC = concentration difference of solute on the two sides of the membrane (Cinside – Coutside) 1-0=1...

Case study on Osmosis: In Habersham County, Tom was feeling slightly nervous as he exited the staff lounge and entered the hustle and bustle of County Hospital’s ER to begin his first shift as an RN. The first few hours of his shift passed slowly as Tom mostly checked vital signs and listened to patients complain about various aches, pains, coughs, and sniffles. He realized that the attending physician, Dr. Greene, who was rather “old school” in general about how...

Diffusion of gases across a permeable membrane 1. How long did it take the O2 levels to become about equal outside and inside the cell? What happened to those levels after they became about equal over the additional 10 seconds? Why did this happen? My answer: It took 6 seconds to become equal. After they became about equal over the additional 10 seconds they fluctuate back and forth as equal equilibrium is achieved. 2.Cell use O2 and produce CO2 as...
