Are there ions that dissociate from glucose when it is dissolved in water? How might that influence the conductivity observed? a. What happens to the theoretical pH of the solution as you dilute it 10-fold each time?

Answer #1
  • Glucose dissolves in water by making hydrogen bonds with water molecules.
  • That is glucose doesn't dissociate into ions in water.
  • It is considered a non electrolyte. Therefore solution containing glucose do not conduct electricity.
  • Glucose doesn't contain any basic or acidic functional groups. So it is chemically neutral in nature.
  • In other words, glucose can't alter the pH level of a solution and therefore glucose solution have a pH value same as the pH of water.
  • So when we dilute glucose solution,it will not make any difference in theoretical value of pH.

How many of the following responses are true? 1. When dissolved in water, the third dissociation of H3PO4 will not produce a significant amount of the H+ ion 2. Successive Ka values for polyprotic acids become larger, and are therefore more important in determining the pH of a solution 3. The % dissociation of H3PO4 is greater than that of a strong acid because there are more moles of protons in the polyprotic acid 4. HCN is a strong acid...

Hard water often contains dissolved Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions. One way to soften water is to add phosphates. The phosphate ion forms insoluble precipitates with calcium and magnesium ions, removing them from solution. Suppose that a solution is 0.054 M in calcium chloride and 0.076 M in magnesium nitrate. What mass of sodium phosphate would have to be added to 1.8 L of this solution to completely eliminate the hard water ions? Assume complete reaction.

Ethylene glycol (C2H4(OH)2) , when dissolved in water, provides the standard ‘anti-freeze’ coolant for water-cooled engines. In order to depress the freezing point of water by 20 °C, how many grams of ethylene glycol would need to be dissolved in 15 kg of pure water? (The molal freezing point depression constant for water Kf = 1.86 K mol-1 kg and the relevant atomic masses are: C = 12g, H = 1g and O = 16g.) Note: ethylene glycol is an...

What is the equilibrium concentration of Cd2+ions when cadmium oxalate, Cd(ox), is dissolved in water to make an initial concentration of 0.0100 M? All of the cadmium oxalate dissolves but only a fraction of it dissociates as indicated below. What are the equilibrium concentrations of the 3 species shown in the reaction equation below? Cd(ox)=(Cd2+)+ (ox2–) K = 2.0 × 10–4
