Ans) the characteristic feature of multiple sclerosis, which is an autoimmune disease, separating it from other autoimmune diaeases of its kind is the formation of lesions in the central nervous system (often called plaques) and the destruction of myelin sheath of neuron. Other similar autoimmune diaeases such as muscular dystrophy, rheumatoid arthritis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, etc. donot possess the characteristic features such as destruction of myelin and formation of lesion in the CNS.
