What was the FDA reaction to the Thalidomide tragedy
in the 1960's? Why is it important?
Thalidomide was comes in the market in 1950's and used to sold in the counter as a mild sleeping pill. Although it was announced as safe medication een for women during pregnancy, but in reality, Thalidomide resulted in deformation in newly born babies. As the manufacturer of the drug did not produce enough evidence in support for the safe use of Thalidomide, in 1960's FDA refused to approve the drug.
Thalidomide was supposed to be safe when used as sleeping pill. Additionally, women in pregnancy period were also encouraged to take the medicine. However, in the period between 1950's-1960's several thousand babies with defprmation in limb were born.. At the end in 1962 the drug was prohobited from selling.
