Many factors contribute to the complex nature of membrane fluidity. Clearly describe at least two characteristics of membrane lipids that influence fluidity. In a hypothetical organism that varies its membrane lipid content in response to changing temperatures, describe two specific changes in membrane lipid composition that could occur in response to lower environmental temperature. Why is such a response necessary?
there are several characteristics which can influence the membrnr fluifdity. Such as-
i) lipids made of shorter chain-as they are less stiff and viscocity will be low.
ii) lipids with the presence of carbon -carbon double bond- as they maintain the fluidity of membrnae in comparison to lipid with hydrogen bond.
At low temperature -
i) the lipids will be present in trans configuration.
ii) lipids will be present as laterally ordered.
this response are required for maintanace of membrane fluidity. As low temperature results in decrease in membrane fluidity.
