If you took a “time machine” back to the Devonian “Age of Fishes,” what groups would you see appearing? What groups would be ascending or descending from the scene? Which would most resemble our modern teleost fishes? Which would be closest to our ancestors?
Devonian period was the period of fishes. If we will go back into this period through the time machine than we will see that the group of ammonites (shell bearing marine organisms) are appearing. As the time will pass the two groups of lung and bony fishes will appear. Amphibians can be seen developed from the lobe finned fish that has adapted to the environment of the land.
The ammonite group and lobe- finned fishes would be descending and the group of cartilaginous fishes like shark would be ascending. The lobe- finned fishes resemble to modern coelacanth and lung fishes as these are species left of lobe- finned fishes. The ray-finned fish were the ancestors of the modern fish.
