Why are trans fatty acids considered the unhealthiest type of fat?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Trans fatty acid increases the low density lipoprotein (LDL ) and decreases the high density lipoprotein ( HDL ) . As both of these lipoprotein combine and hence increase the risk of heart disease . Trans fatty acid increases the other risks such as stroke and type 2 diabetes. Trans fatty acid also shows effect on cholesterol levels. LDL increases in the walls of arteries and make them hard . So it leads to formation of blood clotand also causes blood blocking and hence can causes heart attack or stroke. That is why trans fatty acid is considered the unhealthiest type of food.

1. In order for oil to be labeled “no trans-fat,” the mean trans-fat content per serving should be less  than 0.4 milligrams.  A new type of oil was developed, and marketing was hopeful that the oil would meet the “no trans-fat” criteria.  Let  represent the mean trans-fat content per serving  for the new oil.                                        The following are the hypotheses: Ho:  = 0.4 mg  (The new oil does not meet the “no trans-fat” criteria.)         Ha:   < 0.4 mg (The new oil meets the “no trans-fat” criteria.)                                        a.  State the Type...

4. Fats are esters of fatty acids. Saponfication number of fat is used as an indication of the average formula weight of fat molecules. Saponification number is expressed as the milligrams of KOH required to hydrolyze (saponify) one gram of fat. Ester hydrolysis (saponification): 1.0 of a fat sample treated with 25.0 ml of 0.25 M of KOH solution. After the saponification, unreacted KOH is back-titrated with 0.25 M HCl. The volume of HCl required for this titration was 9.0...
