A scientific theory is not dependent on a wild guess. It is consistent with known experimental results and it should have predictive power. As new knowledge is acquired, theories are refined to explain the data more accurately. A law is a mathematical relationship that is consistently found to be true.

A law is an observation; on the other hand, a theory is the explanation of that observation.
A theory requires many experiments under various conditions but a law does not need such requirements.
A theory may become obsolete with time. On the other hand, law will not be obsolete with time.
A theory can be replaced by another better theory; however, this will never happens with a law.
A theory may be strong or weak according to the amount of evidence available; however, a law is a universally observable fact.
