We are growing bacteria using media containing proteins ONLY. Explain whether the bacteria can meet its needs for other types of organic molecules when grown in this media 3pts.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Bacteria can meet its need for other type of organic molecules using proteins as carbon source. First proteins will be hydrolyzed into individual amino acids.

By amino acid metabolism pathway, different amino acids can be converted into different important molecules of TCA cycle such as pyruvate, acetyl Co-A, alpha-ketogluglutarate, succinyl Co-A, Fumarate, and oxaloacitate. So TCA cycle will be occurred after amino acid metabolism, and ATPs will be Produced. Nucleotides will be synthesized from the well known precursor (for nucleotide synthesis) glutamine. Proteins will be synthesized from derives amino acids.

1. Currently you are studying threonine synthesis in E. coli. To find genes whose protein products are important for threonine synthesis, you perform a mutagenesis to find mutants that require a source of threonine to grow. (a) Immediately after mutagenizing the bacteria, would you choose to grow the bacteria on rich media or on minimal media? Briefly explain your choice. Rich media. A mutant unable to make a particular amino acid will not be able to grown on media lacking...

Due to the growing global concern about climate change, environmental destruction and the increasing number of endangered species, ethical consumerism has become an extremely prominent topic. Bertrand and Regan (2008) describe ethical consumption as consciously identifying the links between a product, its origins and the context in which it has been produced. They define the term as awareness of how a consumer’s lifestyle affects people, communities and the environment, and claim that “[an] ethically-informed consumer realises that when they buy...

The greenhouse effect is caused by gases in the atmosphere that trap heat. We know that the atmosphere is made up of 21% O2 and 78% N2. The other 1% consists of traces of CO2, NO2, CO, NO, O3, N2O, CH4, and CFC’s like CFCl3, CCl2F2, and CCl3CHF2. A) Draw the Lewis structure of N2, NO2, and CFCl3. Indicate the total number of valence electrons in each structure. Submit a photo of your drawing with your ID card.
