6. Describe both the causes and the effects of ocean acidification.
Ocean acidification is caused by carbon dioxide gas dissolving into the oceans as the concentration of carbon dioxide increases in the atmosphere. Many factors like deforestation, burning of fossil fuels etc. contribute to increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in atmosphere.
Acidification of oceans leads to reduction of carbonate in water which is required for coral buildup in oceans and shells of various animals and planktons in the oceans. These coral reef serves as shelter and mode of nutrition for various marine animals. Reduction or destruction of these biomes slowly affect the marine life in oceans negatively.
