Explain why light bends when it goes between different materials and how this amount of bending is determined? Use the following vocabulary words in your summary: index of refraction, incident angle, reflected angle, and refracted angle.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Refraction is the bending of the path of a light wave as it passes from one material into another material. The refraction occurs at the boundary and is caused by a change in the speed of the light wave upon crossing the boundary.

The amount of bending is determined by Snell's Law:

Where N1 refractive index of medium 1 and n2 is refractive index of medium 2

And i is angle of incidence and r is angle of refraction.

By knowing n1 and n2, and measuring angle I we can calculate out the angle r.

Snell's Law and the Law of Reflection explain how light is redirected when it encounters a surface between two media. In the extreme, light may only reflect at a boundary, and go back into the medium it was in. More often, some of it reflects and some goes through. If the boundary is plane and flat, then these laws are easy to interpret. When the boundary is curved, they describe happens at every point on the surface. One of the...

At the interface between two different transparent media light comes in at a diagonal and crosses the interface as shown above. The figure below shows the path of a beam of light through several layers with different indices of refraction. (Assume n4 = 1.10.) An illustration shows four media, represented as long, horizontal rectangles, arranged one on top of the other such that each medium has a higher index of refraction than the medium below it. The indexes of the four media from top to bottom are as follows: 1.60, 1.40, 1.20, and n4. A ray of light starts from within...

Don't limit your thinking to the most common example given of this corrective step: approximation of binomials using the Normal distribution. While that is an example of such a correction, it is only one example.
