34) Small fragments of habitat can only support small populations of plants and plants and small populations are more vulnerable to extinction.

True or False

Homework Answers

Answer #1

It is true because there are many factors which affects the survival of small population like environmental, demographic effect.

Demographic effect - includes reproductive and mortality rates due to influence of stochastic variations. These rates could result to the fluctuations in size and may result in the extinction of small population.

Environmental effect or factor- there are two types of year: - bad year ( low birth rate and high death rate) and good year ( high birth rate and low death rate) . The bad year affects more badly to small population and this can bearable by large population.

The equilibrium theory of island biogeography states that larger islands will have a lower  rate than small islands because larger islands can support larger populations. Islands that are closer to the mainland will have a higher  rate than ones further away because individuals are more likely to successfully travel to close islands, and a lower extinction rate because the ____________ effect will be higher, preventing declining island populations from going extinct through the arrival of new immigrants.
