If you performed a five-fold serial dilution, what is the concentration of the third tube? Assume the first tube has 2 g/mL concentration.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

five-fold serial dilution was made, so dilution factor at each step=5

dilution factor in the third tube ( third step)= dilution factor in tube 1 dilution factor in tube 2 dilution factor in tube 3=555=125

so the concentration in the third tube= original concentration/dilution factor in the third tube

= 2 g/ mL/125

= 0.016 g/mL

concentration of the third tube = 0.016 g/mL

You will prepare a serial dilution with 6 tubes. Into tube 1 you add 0.9 ml NaCl and you add 0.5 ml NaCl into tubes 2-6. Next you add 0.1 ml of serum to tube 1 and mix and transfer 0.5 ml to tube 2. Serial dilution is an essential chemistry skill. Use the description given to calculate the concentration of each new solution. Report all answers to three significant figures, with units of M. The concentration of the initial stock solution is 3.00 M. The first dilution is made by measuring 10.00 mL with a volumetric pipet and diluting in a 100 mL volumetric flask. What is the concentration of the first solution? The second solution is made by measuring 25.00 mL of the...

A student in Biology 328 performed a serial dilution series on his dirt sample to determine the starting concentration of bacterial cells. He performed 5 dilutions by adding 1 mL of the previous culture to the next culture (sterile water) and plated the last dilution as follows: He plated the bacteria by pipetting 1 mL and 0.1 mL (Plates A and B respectively) and spreading the culture evenly over a R2A plate. You are given a culture of bacterial cells of unknown concentration. You are asked to determine the concentration (cells/mL). You make three serial dilutions of 100-fold and a final 10-fold dilution of the sample. After plating 1 mL of this culture dilution on a growth plate, you generate 42 bacterial colonies (each colony represents a single bacterial cell that was on the plate). What was the concentration of the original bacterial cell culture?

6. (16 pts.) When you performed (or will perform) the atomic absorption experiment, you performed parallel dilutions (in lieu of serial dilutions) with a Zn2+ standardized solution, and used your analysis of these dilutions to construct a calibration curve relating the sensitivity of the instrument to the Zn2+ concentration In this problem, you are going to quantify the uncertainty in the concentrations of Zn2+ dilutions obtained from both serial and parallel dilutions and compare the results for the two methods....
