Which of the following substances is basic?

Lemon juice, Vinegar, Baking Soda, or Substance with a pH of 7

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer: Baking soda

Explanation: pH is used to determine whether substance is acidic, basic or neutral. A pH scale is used to determine and tell that the substance is acidic, basic or neutral.

The measuring scale of pH is from 0 to 14. Following are the conditions,

pH Substance
pH < 7 Acidic
pH > 7 Basic
pH = 7 Neutral

- Baking soda also goes with the name sodium bicarbonate. When dissolved in water it forms an alkaline solution. Hence, its ph is more than 7 (around 8) and it is basic in nature.

Incorrect answers:

- Lemon Juice and Vinegar contains acid. Hence their pH is less than 7 ( between 2-3 ). So they are acidic in nature.

- Substance with pH 7 is neutral. Example is water.

You are designing a rocket propulsion vehicle using baking soda and vinegar. Vinegar is 5% v/v acetic acid (C2H4O2) in water. Since plenty of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) has been added to a 2L soda bottle, the limiting reagent is the acetic acid in the vinegar. It can been determined from the below reaction sequence that one gmole of acetic acid produces one gmole of CO2, which will propel our car. CH3COOH + NaHCO3 → CH3COONa + H2CO3 H2CO3 →...
