describe the most important evolutionary event in any branch of the tree of life and its outcomes?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

One of the most important events in the tree of life is The Great Oxidation Event This event is also known by the names: The great Oxygenation Event, Oxygen Catastrophe, Oxygen Crisis, and, Oxygen Revolution

It was a period in the tree of life when the amount of oxygen rose in the atmosphere of Earth as well as shallow ocean of Earth. This rise in oxygen was caused by the actions of cyanobacteria. The cyanobacteria by photosynthesis produced oxygen in the atm. Oxygen was in diatomic form. That is O2. And thus, it changed Earth's atmosphere from a weakly reducing atmosphere to an oxidizing atmosphere. This lead to the mass extinction of many existing species of that time, mostly anaerobic bacterias. This event happened to aid the growth in the diversity of minerals. And mainly, it lead to tthe origin of eukaryotic organisms. And it also lead to the formation of multicellular organisms.

Construct (draw) a phylogeny of all plants and include important evolutionary innovations in the nodes of this tree. Create a key (i.e., a list of characteristics) of each of the groups that include the non-vascular plants, vascular plants without seeds, vascular plants with seeds without flowers and flowering plants. You should include the names of the most important groups on each branch (e.g., mosses, ginkgo, ferns, etc.)

A branch from a bristlecone pine tree is found in a sedimentary layer, and its age is to be determined. The branch is a 5.0-gram piece of cellulose (C6H10O5: molar mass = 162 g/mole). This specimen is taken and placed between scintillation detectors, and over a 24-hour period 16,500 decays were recorded. How old is this branch? When the tree was living, carbon-14 accounted for 1 out of every 7.2x1011 atoms of carbon. The half-life of carbon-14 is 5730 years.
