Using The Merck Index available on Canvas, determine whether or not the following solvents are miscible. (0.5 pts each) 1.water and diethyl ether 2. acetone and water 3. acetone and diethyl ether.

How to determine whether solvents are miscible based on the Merck Index?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Diethyl ether has a limited solubility in water and dissolves in it . This can be use as a ideal non polar solvent .Dimethyl ether is miscible with water .

In the second option ,acetone is miscible in water . It means acetone dissolves in water because both liquids are polar in nature .When these two liquids are mixing a hydrogen bond develops in between them.

In the third option, the difference in the dipole moments of the acetone and diethyl ether , di ether will not dissolve in the acetone
