Which of the following cells should scatter the most light in the side angle?

1.

red blood cell

2.

monocyte

3.

lymphocyte

4.

neutrophil

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The side scatter of light occurs due to the presence of a large number of tiny particles in the cell. Thus, the side scatter gives information about the complexity of the internal environment of the cell. The granular the cytoplasm, the more side scatter there is.

Red blood cells are simple cells without a nucleus. They merely act as oxygen-carrying agents and do not have granularity.

Monocytes and Lymphocytes are agranular cells and have large nuclei.

Neutrophils are granulocytes (other granulocytes are Eosinophils and Basophils). They have a dense cytoplasm with a large number of granules.

Thus, of the four cell types, only Neutrophils are granular and hence have high internal complexity. Therefore, they will be the ones to give the largest side scatter.

Hence, the correct option is Neutrophil.

Red and white blood cells develop from a common hematopoietic stem cell, which is large and nucleated. After cell differentiation and maturation, red cells no longer have nuclei and are very small, and white cells are nucleated, often large, filled with granules, and are capable of phagocytosis. Why do mature red blood cells look so different from their white counterparts?
