  1. The peripheral chemoreceptors are denervated in an experimental animal, and the animal then breathes a gas mixture containing 10 percent oxygen. What changes occur in the animal’s ventilation? What changes occur when this denervated animal is given a mixture of air containing 21 percent oxygen and 5 percent carbon dioxide to breathe?

Answer #1

Peripheral chemoreceptors are located at the bifurcation of common carotid artery. It senses the respiratory condition, the amount of oxygen and carbondioxide present in the blood. And it leads to acclimatization in case of hypoxia.

If the peripheral chemoreceptors are denervated, it leads to abolition of normocapnic response to hypoxia and reduced responce to hypercapnia. It means, in case of hypoxia where oxygen level is too low, the chemoreceptors senses it and helps in increasing the ventilation through peripheral nervous system. In case of hypercapnia where carbondioxide is too high, it helps in reducing respiration. Thus after degenration, the controling of these ventilation get ceased whoch means the ventilation is same in 10% oxygen and 21% oxygen with 5% carbon dioxide. In normal case, ventilation increases and decreases respectively in both cases.

In the control of breathing, what is the factor that is most closely monitored by chemoreceptors? The amount of ammonia in the blood The amount of urea in the blood Blood pressure The amount of CO2 in the blood Why do larger animals have complex internal systems to exchange nutrients and wastes with their environments? Because wastes break down much faster in larger animals and become toxic more quickly Because they often live in environments with less available oxygen Because...

A natural gas mixture of methane (CH4) and ethane (C2H6) are used for the fuel source for generation of steam in a refinery plant. In this process,The gas stream mixture 1000kg/min having 70wt% CH4 and 30wt% C2H6 is burned with 100% excess air.Gas analysis shows that the CH4 and 85% C2H6 are completely burned into carbon dioxide , while 10% C2H6 is partially burned into carbon monoxide and the remaining C2H6 is unreacted. Background Almost all animal and plant cells require oxygen and give off carbon dioxide. This is called gas exchange and it occurs by passive diffusion. Some animals do all or most of their gas exchange across their skin (for example amphibians) but they have very low metabolisms and use very little oxygen and get rid of very little carbon dioxide. On the other hand humans (and other mammals) have very high metabolic requirements and we can’t rely on gas exchange...
