Gestational diabetes is the condition of high blood glucose level during pregnancy which becomes normal after birth.
The level of glucose in the blood is regulated by insulin. When we eat food our blood glucose level rises which is sensed by pancreas and release of insulin occurs which enhances the uptake of glucose by the cell resulting into low blood glucose level. During pregnancy placenta release hormone which causes glucose to build up in the blood. Generally the condition is compensated by release of higher amount of insulin by pancreas but if not, then gestational diabetes occurs.
