Channel proteins present on the membrane assists in transport of hydrophilic molecules across the phospholipid bilayer of the cell membrane. These are of two types

  1. Gated Channel
  2. Non-gated Channel

Non-gated channel remains always open on both sides of the membrane and is frequently found in organelle membrane than on the cell membrane while, gated channel remains shut down and its opening and closure is regulated by the presence of ligands (ligand gated channel) or voltage across the membrane (voltage gated ion channels)
