1. The another term for the calories used to process food is "empty calories ". The process foods do not contain any nutritional value because these foods are devoid of protein fibers, vitamins, minerals, essential fatty acids but these foods contains sugar, fats, oils and alcohol.

2. The moderate consumption of such process foods is not harmful but high consumption of such foods lead to weight gain. The processed foods like cookies, sugar added fruit juices, chips, candy, soft drinks, cake, margarine and alcoholic beverages like beer and wine have little or no nutritional value but these components contribute to excess calories and excess calories long term consumption leads to weight gain. Weight gain lead to disease like diabetes, heart related diseases etc.

3. Replacing empty calorie foods with low calorie food can be significant part of weight loss plan.
