  1. Sebastian, a triathlete training for an Ironman distance event (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, and 26.2 mile run), is suffering from IBS(irritable bowel syndrome).  Looking online he reads that atropine is sometimes recommended for this condition.  Explain why atropine might be useful in this situation. He decides to go to the doctor and ask if this is a good alternative for his condition.  Prior to his appointment his vitals are taken – his blood pressure is 100/58 and his heart rate is 48.  Knowing this do you think his doctor will approve of the use of atropine?  Why or why not?

Answer #1

Irritable bowel syndrome is characterized by spasm of intestinal(mainly large intestine) muscles which causes pain and discomfort. Diarrhoea and constipation also occur.

Atropine can be given in IBS as it will reduce the spasm of muscles in colon. Atropine is non slective anticholinergic drug, so it reduces tone and amplitude of contraction of stomach and intestine. Hence symptom of IBS will be relieved.

Since it can be seen that Sebastian also has low heart rate, prescribing atropine will be beneficial as atropine induces tachycardia. Hence prescribing atropine will help both in IBS and in restoring normal heart rate.
