Useful therapy of phantom limb pain includes injections of pain killers at the site of pain. True/False
The stimulus location is recognised accurately due to point to point representation of the body in the somatosensory cortex. Therefore when the sensory fibres are experimentally stimulated anywhere in their course to the cortex, the conscious sensation produced is referred to the location of the receptor. This principle is called the law of projection. Because of this reason, after amputation of a limb, sometimes patient complains of intense pain in the absent limb. This is called the phantom limb. These sensations are produced due to irritation of the damaged nociceptive and proprioceptive afferents at the stump of amputated limb. The sensations evoked are projected to the area where receptors are used to be located.
Therefore, we can't apply pain killers at the site of phantom limb pain as limb is not present. This statement is False.
