Answer: The so called 'critical care' analytes comprises of

1. metabolites (glucose, lactate, urea, creatinine).

• measurement of metabolites gives information of prevalence of metabolic disorders (diabetes, gout).

2. electrolytes (Na+, K+, Ca2+, Cl−)

• measurement of electrolytes is useful in assessing dehydration.

3. blood gases (O2, CO2, pH)

• measurement of blood gases helps in assessing hypoventilation and hyperventilation.
