Why would nephrons be located in difference places of the kidney? Name the locations (be specific!) and the proper names for them
There are two types of nephrons in the kidney. Their locations in the kidney is different as they have to perform some different functions.
1. Superficial cortical nephrons: The glomeruli of these nephrons are located in the outer cortex. Their Loop of Henle is shorter and extended only up to the outer medulla. They operate under normal conditions. Their major function is excretion of waste products into the urine.
2. Juxtamedullary nephrons: The glomeruli of these nephrons are located at the border of cortex and medulla. Their glomeruli are large and thus have greater filtration rate. Their Loop of Henle is longer and extended up to the deeper inner medulla and papilla. Operates especially during high activity. Their major function is to concentrate the urine by counter current mechanism.
