Why are ventilators used when someone has duchesses muscular dystrophy

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a kind of muscle weakness. In this type of dystrophy it affects the muscles responsible for the breathing. The diaphragm is mainly affected so that leads to hypoventilation. In such patients dizziness is common and they are not able to stand straight probably. If this happens the Pco2 in the blood elevates and the oxygen transportation in the blood decreases. As the lungs expansion is affected it fails to deliver enough oxygen to the body tissues in one of the greatest complication of this disease. So in this case we need ventilation as the patients forced vital capacity is dropping down below 15%. So the situation is worse. To support the body needs they need oxygen delivery. So we need artificial oxygen supply methods like ventilators to support their life

22. Fill in the blank. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is caused by an X-linked recessive mutation in the DMD gene, which encodes the protein dystrophin. A female without the disease mates with a male with Duchenne muscular dystrophy; they have two sons and two daughters. The first son has the disease as does their first daughter. Based on this, the probability that the second son will have the disease is __________. The probability that the second daughter will be a carrier...

A couple (both of which are normal) has a son that has Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This is a rare sex-linked recessive disorder which causes muscle deterioration that almost always affects boys. The parents believe that the hospital mixed their child up with a normal child and sue the hospital. You have once again been called as an expert in genetics to testify. What do you tell the jury? Is it possible that these are the biological parents or did the...

Duchenne muscular dystrophy, or DMD, is the result of a recessive allele. If a woman with DMD and a man without DMD have children, all of the sons will have DMD, but none of the daughters will. Why does this occur? DMD is sex-linked, and all daughters will inherit a dominant allele from their father. DMD is sex-linked, and all sons will receive a recessive allele from their father. Multiple alleles control the expression of DMD in daughters, who have...

You’ve discovered a new gene that you think is mutated in muscular dystrophy. Describe the methods that you could use to gain further insight into (a) whether the family you’re studying carries a specific mutation and (b) whether the protein is actually expressed in muscle.

MusculoSkeletal System There are nine types of muscular dystrophy, with each type involving an eventual loss of strength, increasing disability, and possible deformity. Pick one type and discuss it. There is no known cure for muscular dystrophy and the causes are complex and multifold. Stem Cell treatment, however, as a cutting edge treatment is showing some initial hope for success. Please research and discuss. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a severe, debilitating and progressive muscle wasting disease in which children become wheelchair-bound by their early teens and usually die in their twenties. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is an x-linked recessive genetic condition and whilst it is carried by girls it is only (with very rare exceptions) boys who are affected.
