What is the Regulation of ventilation by CO2, O2, and pH?.
Answer: There are respiratory centres present in body which contains chemoreceptors. These chemoreceptors help in detecting the blood pH level. When the concentration of CO2 increases in the body, the level of pH decreases making blood acidic.Similarly when level of CO2 decreses and O2 level increases beyond the normal level, the blood pH increases making it basic. Whenever Chemoreceptors detect such an increase/decrease in pH level they signals the brain's respiratory centers to regulate the ventilation rate to maintain the blood pH by increasing/decreasing the carbon dioxide removal.
