Why is the ST segment on an EKG depressed during ischemia and elevated during infarction?
The ST segment is that portion of the ECG cycle from the end of the QRS complex to the beginning of the T wave. It represents the beginning of ventricular repolarization. It is depressed in the ischemia because it represents that some of the myocardial fibers are still alive but due to ischemia ions are leaking out of the cells making the potential more negative during repolarization giving a negative potential value on ECG.
It is elevated in the myocardial infarction as myocardial cells are dead.
