Diabetes Insipidus (DI) is a condition in which a person does not secrete a sufficient amount of antidiuretic hormone (ADH). In a person with DI, what would you expect their relative osmolality of their urine to be (high, average or low osmolality)?. Explain your response. What symptoms might a person with DI experience as a result?
People suffering from DI have a low urine osmolality.
Diabetes Insipidus is characterized by decrease production of ADH. ADH is responsible for reabsorption of water by the kidneys into the circulation. In the absence of ADH the collecting ducts are impermeable to water, and it flows out as urine. This results in an excessive production of urine. As result the osmolality of urine decreases.
A person with Diabetes Insipidus will experience excessive thirst (polydipsia). Dehydration can occur if the amount of fluid intake is not kept in pace with the amount of urine passed. This can lead to electrolyte imbalance which can result in symptoms of headache, fatigue and muscle pain.
