A complete and thorough knowledge and understanding of the musculosceletal system as well as the neurological components is crucial to the success of any physical or occupational therapist. As healthcare professionals charged with the rehabilitation of sick and injured patients, we must be able to quickly and accurately assess the problem and create a plan. As physical therapy students, we are required to know all the muscles in the human body as well as their origin, insertion, action and innervation. Also required is the knowledge of the joints and kinesiology of the human body. Armed with this knowledge a therapist can accurately trace a problem from site of pain or dysfunction to its source. Without this understanding, patient’s health can be at risk. It can be dangerous to treat a patient if one does not understand how the muscles, bones and nerves work together.
