During fasting stage in normal individuals,thr blood sugar levels is maintained at 60-100mg/dl. The stress of surgery and anesthesia alters the balance between hepatic glucose production and glucose utilisation.A n increase in secretion of hormones like catecholamines, cortisol, glucagon, and growth hormone occurs which causes excess release of inflammatory cytokines.t hey cause increased hepatic glucose production and promote gluconeogenesis which increases blood glucose levels.

So to maintain normal glucose levels,increased insulin levels are to be administered.
