Describe the effects of early experiences on the development of the visual system. Then, discuss how visual deprivation might affect the development of the visual system. Review a current research study to discuss something of interest, something we are currently learning, and/or something new about this topic
Development of visual system with age includes:
1. Absence of central fixation at birth.
2. Fixation reflex starts by first month of life and is established by 6 months.
3. Macular stereopsis and accommodation reflex develop by 6 months.
4. Full visual acuity (6/6) develops by 6 years of age.
All these occurs by time as the child starts to learn focussing on different subjects and development of neural circuits occur completely. Thus Thuly expirence to light is an important feature. Exposure leads to release of brain derived neurotropic factor which causes and increase in neuronal plasticity and thus helps.
