What makes up the extra cellular matrix

What makes up the extra cellular matrix

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer. Extracellular matrix is present outside the cell. It has the following compostion:

  • Collagen fibers that are insoluble in nature and helps in providing strength.
  • Proteoglycans that are extremely viscous in nature, it acts as a cushion between the cells.
  • Proteins like fibronectin and laminin that helps in binding to the collagen fibers and the proteoglycans.

Extracellular matrix helps in the migration of cells during the embryo development, cell anchorage, cell signaling, tissue morphogenesis and wound repair.

Degradation of it means ECM abbreviated for extracellular matrix may lead to various ailments.

If a person has a disease that causes fluid build up in the extra cellular fluid, how would that affect the diffusion of oxygen and carbon dioxide into and out of the extra cellular fluid from the alveoli? Would they (O2 and CO2) be affected equally? Why or why not? How could a disease that causes this symptom be caused? What would happen to the pH of the plasma? Why? How might the kidneys try to compensate?
