The Parathyroid glands secrete parathyroid hormone. The main function of PTH is to increase the blood calcium levels when it is low. This is achieved by indirectly increasing amount of calcium absorbed from small intestine and reabsorbed from renal tubules. If these resources provide inadequate supplies, then it stimulates osteoclasts and resorption of calcium from bones.
The calcitonin acts on bone and kidneys to reduce the blood calcium levels when it is raised. Release of calcitonin is stimulated by an increase in blood calcium level.
Parathromone and calcitonin from thyroid gland act in a complementary manner to maintain blood calcium levels within normal range.
