Obtaining regression estimates for cost estimation requires establishing the existence of a logical relation between activities and the cost to be estimated. Which of the following is not used to refer to these activities?

  • X terms.

  • dependent variables.

  • predictors.

  • independent variables.

Answer #1

Answer: Dependent variables

The most significant step in obtaining regression estimates for the purpose of cost estimation is to demonstrate that a logical relationship exists between the cost to be estimated(dependent variables) and the activities(independent variables). These activities are called predictors, independent variables, x terms or the RHS of a given regression equation. The costs that are to be estimated are referred as the Y term, the dependent variable or the LHS of a given regression equation. It is the responsibility of the cost analyst to provide that the activities are logically associated with the costs. Thus, dependent variables are not used to refer to activities rather it is used to refer to the cost that is to be estimated.

A regression analysis is a statistical assessment of the association between two variables, one of which is dependent and the other, independent. The dependent variable is y and the independent variable is x. Regression analysis is used to find the relationships between these variables. Variables within a regression analysis can be negatively correlated or positively correlated. A situation in which one could model a regression analysis could be the association of hours studied and a grade on a test. The...

An important application of regression analysis in accounting is in the estimation of cost. By collecting data on volume and cost and using the least squares method to develop an estimated regression equation relating volume and cost, an accountant can estimate the cost associated with a particular manufacturing volume. Consider the following sample of production volumes and total cost data for a manufacturing operation. Production Volume (units) Total Cost ($) 400 4,000 450 5,000 550 5,400 600 5,900 700 6,400...

The assumption of homoscedasticity requires the residuals (differences between observed and estimated values) to be relatively similar (homogeneous) across different values of the predictor variables. (T/F) The assumption of normality relates to the distributions of the independent variables; they must be normally distributed. (T/F) If the distribution of residuals (actual value minus estimated value) is negatively skewed with a mean of 5 and a standard deviation of 1, this indicates that (a) the regression line is estimated below the majority...

A real estate agent in Athens used regression analysis to investigate the relationship between apartment sales prices and the various characteristics of apartments and buildings. The variables collected from a random sample of 25 compartments are as follows: Sale price: The sale price of the apartment (in €) Apartments: Number of apartments in the building Age: Age of the building (in years) Size: Apartment size (area in square meters) Parking spaces: Number of car parking spaces in the building Excellent...

Requirements The task is basically to establish a relation between the two variables by applying statistical measures. The relation should be clear after that and enough to form an interpretation of about 1000 words where the enitre method is explained and the results are analyzed.
