Create the null and alternative hypotheses for the following research problems! Some people believe that sons are taller than their fathers. Conduct a study to verify the theory!

Answer #1

There are two ways:

1) Independent sample t-test

Take the average of the sum of the height of fathers and sons and check for a significance level if the average height of sons is more than that of the fathers.

Null hypothesis: the average height of sons is greater than or equal to that of the average height of fathers.

Alternate hypothesis: the average height of sons is less than that of the average height of fathers.

2) Paired/dependent sample t-test

For each pair of father-son height calculate the differences for each pair and check if the mean difference is greater than 0 or not.

Null hypothesis: The average difference of the paired samples is greater than or equal to 0.

Alternate hypothesis: The average difference of the paired samples is less than to 0.
