Question

You hypothesize that students in fraternities/sororities on your campus are more extroverted (on an introversion/extroversion scale) than other students. To answer your research question, you need to obtain a sample of “Greek” students and a sample of “Independent” students. For each of these two populations of students, explain how you would obtain a sample using each of the following sampling methods. [If it is not possible to obtain a sample using the sampling method given, state “not possible” and explain.] Then, discuss the issue of sample bias as it relates to the type of sampling method used.

Sampling Methods

• Simple Random Sampling

• Convenience Sampling

• Network Sampling

Answer #1

We would use Convenience Sampling as we want to study between Greek students and independent students. We would preferably take some Greek students and then independent students and study about their introversion/extroversion characteristics.

Sample bias is a bias in which we give more preference to some data points from the population. Also in sample bias the probability of one sample is more than others which leads to bias. Sample bias relates to the sampling method because if the sampling method is not proper then the samples drawn will be bias and results of the sampling will not be proper.

Research question: Amongst all Penn State students, do
traditional-age students and adult learners differ in terms of
their grade point averages (GPA)?
Researchers are going to collect data from 1,000 Penn
State students. They will call each student to ask whether they
identify as a traditional-age student or as an adult learner. They
will also ask each student for their GPA (scale of 0 to
4.0).

students at arkansas campus were measured for their liking of
ethnic cuisines on a scale of 1 to 5. campus dining will start

Suppose you want to estimate the mean GPA of all students at
your school. You set up a table in the library asking for
volunteers to tell you their GPAs.
a. Will this method produce a representative sample? Why or why
not?
b. If there is bias in the experiment, explain what type of bias
is present.
c. Design a simple random sample to estimate the mean GPA of all
students

Let's say you want to poll a random sample of 150 students on
campus to see if they prefer to take online classes. Of course, if
you took an actual poll you would only get one number (your sample
proportion, p-hat). Imagine all the possible samples of 150
students that you could draw and the distribution of all the
possible sample proportions you would get from them.
If I told you that we know that 35% of all students actually...

Mayer High School's austerity committee wants to estimate the
proportion of students that are pleased with the cleanliness of the
campus. They consider two methods of obtaining a sample of 400
students from the 2,500 students at the school.
Part A: To make the process easier, the committee
considers surveying the first 400 students who enter the gym during
the school's first pep rally. Identify the type of sampling method
proposed and discuss why this sampling method might be
biased....

Research question: Amongst Penn State World Campus students, do
those who sleep more tend to have higher grade point averages
(GPAs)? Researchers are going to collect data from a sample of 100
Penn State World Campus students. They will call each student to
ask how many hours they slept last night and they will ask each
student for their GPA (scale of 0 to 4.0).

Explain how you determined this.

Researchers are trying to estimate the mean student loan amount
owed by students in a large university and the proportion of all
students who carry a student loan. A group of 50 students is
randomly selected from each of the 200 majors within the
university. The responses of these students showed that 30% held a
student loan and the mean debt was $18450.

To estimate the mean height μ of male students on your campus,
you will measure an SRS of students. Heights of people of the same
sex and similar ages are close to Normal. You know from government
data that the standard deviation of the heights of young men is
about 2.8 inches. Suppose that (unknown to you) the mean height of
all male students is 70 inches. (a) If you choose one student at
random, what is the probability that...
