You hypothesize that students in fraternities/sororities on your campus are more extroverted (on an introversion/extroversion scale) than other students. To answer your research question, you need to obtain a sample of “Greek” students and a sample of “Independent” students. For each of these two populations of students, explain how you would obtain a sample using each of the following sampling methods. [If it is not possible to obtain a sample using the sampling method given, state “not possible” and explain.] Then, discuss the issue of sample bias as it relates to the type of sampling method used.

Sampling Methods

• Simple Random Sampling

• Convenience Sampling

• Network Sampling

Answer #1

We would use Convenience Sampling as we want to study between Greek students and independent students. We would preferably take some Greek students and then independent students and study about their introversion/extroversion characteristics.

Sample bias is a bias in which we give more preference to some data points from the population. Also in sample bias the probability of one sample is more than others which leads to bias. Sample bias relates to the sampling method because if the sampling method is not proper then the samples drawn will be bias and results of the sampling will not be proper.

Let's say you want to poll a random sample of 150 students on campus to see if they prefer to take online classes. Of course, if you took an actual poll you would only get one number (your sample proportion, p-hat). Imagine all the possible samples of 150 students that you could draw and the distribution of all the possible sample proportions you would get from them. If I told you that we know that 35% of all students actually...

Mayer High School's austerity committee wants to estimate the proportion of students that are pleased with the cleanliness of the campus. They consider two methods of obtaining a sample of 400 students from the 2,500 students at the school. Part A: To make the process easier, the committee considers surveying the first 400 students who enter the gym during the school's first pep rally.
