Research question: Amongst all Penn State students, do traditional-age students and adult learners differ in terms of their grade point averages (GPA)?

Researchers are going to collect data from 1,000 Penn State students. They will call each student to ask whether they identify as a traditional-age student or as an adult learner. They will also ask each student for their GPA (scale of 0 to 4.0).

9. Describe how researchers could use a convenience sampling method to obtain a sample of 1,000 Penn State students. In other words, describe the procedures of obtaining a convenience sample in this scenario. [8 points]

11. In order to obtain a sample that is representative of the intended population, should researchers use the convenience sampling method from question 9 or the simple random sampling method from question 10? Explain why. [8 points]

Answer :

9.

In this study the researchers could obtain a convenience sample by only collecting the data if the learner is traditional age or adult learner. If a random sample is used and if the learner is not a traditional age learner or adult learner then that sample would not contribute in the data. Hence use convenience sampling.

10.

The students with the serial numbers selected constitute Simple Random Sample.

11.

In order to obtain a sample that is representative of the intended population, the researchers should use the simple random sampling method because in a simple random sampling method because that way, every student has the same probability of getting into the sample.

Do adult learners and traditional students differ in terms of how many hours per week they plan to devote to PSY 298 on average? Data were taken from a sample of students. A hypothesis test was conducted and the null hypothesis was not rejected. In other words, the result was to fail to reject the null hypothesis. Later, data from the entire population were available. Using that population data, the researchers found that there was a difference in how many...

The Office of Student Life at Cleveland State University investigated differences in traditional and nontraditional students, where nontraditional students are defined as 25 years or older and working. Based on the study results, it was assumed that the population mean and standard deviation for the GPA of nontraditional students is µ = 2.75 and ? = 0.56. a. Suppose a random sample of 49 nontraditional students is selected and each student's GPA is calculated. The probability that the random sample...
