A graduate student in the I/O Master’s program at UC conducted a study to investigate the effect of different type of reward incentives on employee motivation. The researcher randomly selected 30 hourly employees from the company to participate in the study. Each participant was randomly assigned to one of 3 reward conditions (1 day off work, $250 bonus check, or an employee recognition celebration). Participants were then told that if they worked an overtime shift during the next week that they would receive the particular reward incentive based on their assigned condition. Each participant completed a brief 10 point reward satisfaction survey at the end of the week indicating the level of their motivation for the overtime.
