A psychologist was interested in whether eccentric students scored above or below the mean grade point average (GPA) at a high school. She figured the average GPA at the school to be 2.55 with a standard deviation of .5 and noted that the distribution was approximately normal. She then figured the average GPA for 15 students regarded as eccentric by their classmates. Their mean GPA was 2.76.

Use the 5 steps of hypothesis testing at the .01 significance level.

Assuming you have already stated step 1, what is the standard deviation of the comparison distribution (do not round off during your calculations but round off answer to 3 decimal points)?

A school psychologist was interested in whether the 12 students in the chess club had a higher or lower mean grade point average (GPA) than the other students at a school. The overall GPA at the school was 2.55 with a standard deviation of 0.5; the distribution of GPAs was approximately normal. The average GPA of students in the chess club was 2.76. Using the .05 significance level, did the chess club represent a population that was different from students...
