Explanatory and response variable-

Response variable is the main focus of investigator's question in an experiment. Here investigator focuses to gather data about the numbers of items that is remembered. So, number of items that were remembered is the response variable here.

Explanatory variable is that one which explains the changes of response variable. Here 'type of person one considers himself' is used to explain the number of items that were remembered by him. So, here type of person one considers himself is the explanatory variable.
