A researcher randomly selected a sample of n = 1000 city residents. Participants were asked to complete a short online survey that include question about an average number of work hours per week and an average number of leisure hours per week. .What kind of correlation is likely to be obtained for these two variables (i.e., average number of hours spent at work and on leisure activities)?

  • A. a negative correlation

  • B. a positive correlation

  • C. a correlation larger than 1.0

  • D. a correlation near zero

Homework Answers

Answer #1

option C is incorrect because correlation coefficient can never be greater than 1. So, it is incorrect option.

option A is correct because we know that there are 24 hours in a day and if we spent most hours in work, then there will be less number of hours for leisure activities. Similarly, if we work less then we will get more number of hours for leisure activities.

So, there is a negatve correlation.

Option B and D are incorrect because we see that there is an inverse relationship between hours of work and hours of leisure activities. So, there is neither positive correlation nor zero correlation.
