Religion and Newspaper. One survey recently conducted investigated if people that consider themselves religious are more likely to read a daily newapaper regularly. The score ranged ranged from 1(less than once per week)to 7 (daily). Religiosity was measured (and self-assessed) between 1(not religious at all) to 5 (very religious)
a) What type of variables are we using for response and for explanatory variables.
b)Assuming the correlation is 0.5, would you mind say there is a strong relationship between the two variables? Please explain.
c)What if the correlation is 0.25,would you consider it is strong or weak? Explain.
d)What if r was '0', how would you interpret the findings?
e)what if r was- 0.5?
a)
The response variable is number of newspaper read per week and is a categorical variable with values 1 to 5.
The explanatory variable is Religiosity and is also a categorical variables with values 1 to 5.
b)
A correlation of absolute value greater than 0.7 suggests a strong relationship between the two variables.
A correlation of 0.5, suggests a medium correlation between the two variables
c)
A correlation of 0.25 (which is less than 0.40) is considered as a weak correlation between the two variables.
d)
If r = 0, the correlation is 0 and we can consider that there is no linear relationship between the two variables.
e)
If r = -0.5, there is medium negative correlation between the two variables. A negative correlation suggests that if one of the variables increases, the value of other variable decreases and vice-versa.
