Healthy Diet and Cataracts. The relationship between healthy diet and prevalence of cataracts was assessed using a sample of 1808 participants from the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study. Having a high Healthy Eating Index score was the strongest predictor of a reduced risk of cataracts, among modifiable behaviors considered. The Healthy Eating Index score was created by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and measures how well a person’s diet conforms to recommended healthy eating patterns. The report concludes: “These data add to the body of evidence suggesting that eating foods rich in a variety of vitamins and minerals may contribute to postponing the occurrence of the most common type of cataract in the United States.”12
a) It is an observational study rather than experiment because in observational study the researcher draws sample from the population and the independent variables are uncontrolled , here independent variables are Healthy Eating Index score and cataracts which are not controlled rather the in the experiment researcher develops the system or disturbed the natural; system to meet its objectives, but here the natural system is not disturbed. Hence, it is an obsevational study.
b) Here only a sample of 1808 participants from the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study is taken , and it is valid to use "may " because the sample is representative or not is not sure. It solemnly depends on the sampling design. On the basis of the sample we can't be 100% sure to justify the results.
