The vision problem that I choose to research is cataracts. The CDC reports that 17.2 percent of Americans over 40 years of age have a cataract in at least one eye (about 20.5 million people). By 2028, it is expected that over 30 million people will have cataracts ("The Statistics on Eye Disease in America (2020) | NVISION Eye Centers", 2020). Cataracts is when the lens in the eye breakdown by protein as a person age. As a result, the lens becomes cloudy and what the eye sees may appear blurry. Other symptoms of cataracts include seeing double, sensitivity to light, trouble seeing at night, and seeing bright colors fade or yellow instead (Boyd, 2019). Risk factors for Cataracts include hereditary, medical problems, eye injury, spending a lot of time in the sun, medications such as corticosteroids, and age (Boyd, 2019). Treatment for cataracts include surgical removal of cataracts. During surgery they will replace the lens with new ones to correct vision. Barriers, such as a lack of awareness or problems with insurance coverage, may keep people from getting the treatment they need ("The Statistics on Eye Disease in America (2020) | NVISION Eye Centers", 2020). Without being able to see clearly, cataract can negatively impact a person’s daily function.
I would teach the patient and family that if any changes in vision is suspected to notify healthcare provider immediately. Informing the patient to seek regular eye examinations can help detect cataracts and other eye issues at early stages. Also, inform on making healthy life choices. I will educate the patient on how smoking and drinking alcohol can have a poor effect on health. Proper dieting can have an effect by providing the vitamins and nutrients needed to help maintain healthy eyes. According to an article by Mayoclinic.org, “Studies haven't proved that antioxidants in pill form can prevent cataracts. But a large population study recently showed that a healthy diet rich in vitamins and minerals was associated with a reduced risk of developing cataracts. Fruits and vegetables have many proven health benefits and are a safe way to increase the amount of minerals and vitamins in your diet” ("Cataracts - Symptoms and causes", 2020).
