As a teacher in a second-grade classroom, you are teaching a child with a hearing impairment who requires hearing aids. He is able to speak, but the quality of his voice is obviously affected. Other children notice and ask why he sounds different than they do. How do you handle this situation?
I would handle this situation by reminding children how we all possess different traits and characteristics that combine to make us unique beings. I would provide examples to support my statement such as we all differ from each other based on our physical attributes such as height and weight, along with our likes and dislikes, strengths and limitations. In a similar fashion, the student with impaired hearing was just different from the others in terms of his speech and this was a very natural phenomenon.
